The Board of Selectmen is comprised of three members who are elected, one each year, for three-year terms, in the Annual Town Election. As the Chief Elected and Executive Officers of the Town, the Selectmen are vested with all the municipal authority not specifically retained by the Town's legislative body, town meeting, or other elected boards.
The Selectmen are responsible for all facets of governmental duties. The Warrants for the Annual and Special Town Meetings are generated from their office. They also issue the Warrants for any elections or override votes scheduled. The Board works together with the Finance Director, Town Accountant and Finance Committee members to establish the annual operating budget for the Town and to provide a stable economic environment for its citizens. They adopt town administrative policies and provide a valuable link to other boards through their liaison system.
Every July 1st the Selectmen appoint residents to various official boards and commissions; approve all employee hirings; hold public hearings on important town issues, and enforce town by-laws and regulations.
The Selectmen are the statutory licensing agents for the town, and in this capacity, they authorize new licenses, hold hearings to consider infractions of existing licensees, and approve renewals. Licenses include common victualler, automatic amusement, Class I, Class II & Class III auto, alcohol and special one day alcohol. They also supervise and approve all earth removal permits issued within the Town.
The Board of Selectmen meet bi-weekly on Monday evenings, unless otherwise posted, at 6:15 P. M. in their Conference Room at Town Hall. |
